Factors to Consider when Looking for The Best Waterproof Leather Boots
With tons of various options out in the market today, picking the best waterproof leather boots can be overwhelming and daunting. However, no shopping task is too hard if you know where to start and what to look for.
So, here are the considerations I make (and I suggest you also make) whenever I am looking for the perfect waterproof leather boots.
1. Comfort
My priority whenever I am buying shoes is comfort. No matter how great a pair of boots looks or how advanced the features are, it is no use if it is not comfortable to wear.
So, look for shoes with soft interiors that do not rub against the feet, cushioned insoles that offer arch support, padded collar and tongue for added comfort, and laces or zippers for a nice fit as well as easy on and off.
Speaking of fit, make sure your shoes are not too tight or too large. The upper should hug the foot comfortably and snugly while also leaving some space in the toe box to wiggle your toes.
Thick outsoles protect the feet from rocks and other things on the road or trail that can cause injuries. The outsoles should also offer good traction on many surfaces to help you avoid slipping and sliding.
Also, feel free to choose features that are important to you. For example, if you have flat or overpronated feet, you can look for boots that can accommodate custom orthotics or have a supportive midfoot material.
If your feet tend to get sweaty quickly, look for breathability. This does not only wick moisture from sweat but also helps you avoid bad odor and other problems like athlete’s foot.
2. Insulation
Since waterproof leather boots are usually made for the cold weather season, proper insulation is a must. Look for boots with thermal linings, wool, or any other materials that conserve you feet’s heat. This will keep your feet warm and comfortable during rain, snow, or chilly weather.
3. Waterproofing
When shopping for waterproof boots, you should also consider the waterproofing used in the shoes. Waterproof shoes protect your feet from getting wet due to inclement weather, puddles, rain, and snow.
Note also that being waterproof is different from being water-resistant although these terms are often used interchangeably. Most premium genuine leather materials used for boots are naturally waterproof while some synthetic materials are water-resistant.
Water-resistant materials repel the water off the surface but can only do so for a given amount of time. Waterproof boots cannot be penetrated by water at all and are often seam-sealed to further ensure that water won’t come in.
Some leathers which are not naturally waterproof can be combined with waterproof membranes or sprayed with waterproof coatings. These are great for light rain and such but I suggest you buy boots that are really waterproof to get the most out of your hard-earned money.
4. Durability
Leather is already known to be one of the most durable materials for boots. Not only do they last long but also look great even after a few years. Therefore, what you should look for is quality construction.
Make sure your boots are stitched together nicely and that the upper or outsole won’t separate easily. Inspect the details, zippers, and laces and look for weak points that might need reinforcement or extra care.
5. Traction
During the rainy season and when all the streets are wet, chances are they would also be slippery. So, look for leather boots with non-slip, non-marking, thick rubber outsoles that offer excellent traction. Some boots even have outsoles that grip well on both dry and wet surfaces for versatility. This can save you from injuries and give you confidence and control over your every stride.
6. Boot Height
Waterproof leather boots can either be low-cut, mid-cut, or high-cut. Each boot height has its own advantages and disadvantages.
● Low-cut boots fall just below the ankle joint and offer the widest range of motion for fast strides and comfort. However, they are not the best for off-trail adventures or for carrying heavy loads since they do not offer enough protection and support. Water can also come in from the top.
● Mid-cut boots offer the best of both worlds by being a little higher cut. They wrap the ankles for stability, ankle support, and extra protection against rocks and such. They also provide better waterproofing since they can keep debris and water out more efficiently than low-cuts. However, they still lack the strength needed for carrying heavy loads on difficult terrains.
● High-cut boots are the best in waterproofing and weather protection since they go up near the knees. They also offer the best support and stability on mountainous trails. However, they require a longer break-in period and tend to get hot during warmer weather.
